A screw compressor is very similar to the human heart. The human heart has a tricuspid valve, a pulmonary valve, a mitral valve and an aortic valve, while a screw compressor has four key valves, namely, an inlet valve, a minimum pressure valve, an exhaust valve and a safety valve. Today let's start with the intake valve.

The air inlet valve, also commonly referred to as the "intake valve", is usually installed on the air inlet of an air compressor. The intake valve on a conventional fixed speed screw air compressor controls the amount of air that is fed into the air compressor. The intake valve remains closed when the air compressor is started to reduce the starting load on the main motor, and when the desired operating pressure is reached in the compressed air circuit, allowing the compressor's motor to run without load. In some air compressors that are capable of providing variable output by regulating the amount of intake air, the intake valve is held in various open positions to regulate the amount of air entering the compressor. The effective performance of the intake valve directly affects the capacity of the air compressor and its power consumption under load and no-load conditions.
